Chakitaqlla (Foot Hoe)

Potatoes were first domesticated in the Peruvian Andes between 8 to 10,000 years ago. Potato planting was done with a foot hoe called the Chakitaqlla. A ritual was carried out during the planting that included prayers and songs.

Indigenous farmers in Bolivia and Peru developed close to 5,000 varieties of potatoes. The tubers have different shapes, colours and taste.
