Around 2,000 years ago, the Pueblo people of Southwest North America started farming maize, beans and squash. This agricultural lifestyle led to growth of villages and eventually cities. Around 1,200 years ago the ancestral Pueblo began to construct multi-storied adobe apartment buildings. Cities such as Mesa Verde and Choco Canyon had populations in the hundreds and even thousands of people.
